I was in San Francisco this past weekend and one of the friends that I was with told me that we had to stop by Knead Patisserie because she had heard about a crème brûlée pastry that we just had to try. I was obviously game as I don’t ever turn down the chance to try a new dessert!
Knead Patisserie is located in what I’m told is the Mission, and it’s a little out of the way if you’re staying downtown. I really don’t know about public transportation options as we took cabs to get there and back.
Can I take a second to tell you how glad I am that we made this trip? The Pomme d’Amour at Knead Patisserie might be the single best pastry I have ever had in my life. EVER.
The Pomme d’Amour, aka crème brûlée pastry, is quite a bit smaller than it appears. I would say it’s a little bit bigger than a biscuit but smaller than a traditional doughnut. Delicious custardy crème brûlée is surrounded by a super soft pastry shell that tasted very croissant-like. There is a layer of salted caramel between the pastry and crème brûlée that added a really fantastic saltiness. The layer of hard caramelized sugar on top was out of this world. It had such a great crunch when I first bit through the pastry, that really offset the soft pastry and cream.
Every single bite of the Pomme d’Amour was out of this world, and after I finished I found myself trying to scrape up the crème brûlée that had dropped to the plate. My friend was much smarter than I as she bought two and said it tasted just as good the next day!
Eating the Pomme d’Amour made me realize that every other pastry I’ve consumed was just subpar. This is the real deal. By the way, I feel like I should mention that this review is coming from someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy crème brûlée. I will eat it on occasion, but it’s never my first dessert choice. This pastry has made me a believer.
The next time I’m back in San Francisco you can bet that Knead Patisserie will be one of my first stops.
Tip for the Wise: The bakery is in the back of the restaurant. Just walk straight back and there’s a separate little area where you can buy baked goods.
Knead Patisserie is located at 3111 24th Street in San Francisco.
